Frequently Asked Questions

What is the first step?

It begins with a 10-15-minute phone conversation to assess your needs and determine how we can best help. You’ll then be assigned a provider and scheduled for your first appointment, which will include a complete psychiatric evaluation lasting 60-90 minutes. After that, the follow-up appointment times will depend on your treatment plan and needs.

Who will my provider be?

At Finding Balance, we try to treat our patients with a provider who can meet their needs. This may be a psychiatric resident approved by their residency program to work due to the exceptional clinical skills under the direct supervision of Dr. Henderson or by another independent board-eligible or board-certified psychiatrist. If you have a preference, please let us know at your screening, and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Do you do talk therapy or just medication management?

At Finding Balance, we employ board-eligible, board-certified, and resident psychiatrists, all of whom are medical doctors who specialize in mental health. As psychiatrists, our physicians treat patients based on their specific needs, including medications and/or psychotherapy.

What is Osteopathic Manual Treatment (OMT)?

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is a hands-on approach used by osteopathic physicians to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness or injury. Dr. Henderson may use OMT to complement traditional therapies and medications as a trained osteopathic physician. Many patients find OMT helpful in treating physical discomfort or tension related to their mental health condition, such as headaches, muscle tension, or joint pain.

During an OMT session, the osteopathic physician will use their hands to manipulate the patient's muscles, bones, and joints to restore balance and promote the body's natural healing process. The techniques used during an OMT session will vary based on the patient's condition and needs. These services can only be provided in person. Let Dr. Henderson know if you are interested before or during your initial intake appointment.

(Please be aware that OMT is not a primary psychiatric service but a complimentary service to other traditional evidence-based psychiatric treatments. OMT services are not always appropriate for each patient based on their specific needs and history and, therefore, are only available at the physician’s discretion. OMT is also not covered under insurance in-network benefits.)

Do you take insurance?

We are pleased to announce that we are currently In-Network with AETNA, BCBS, and CIGNA. We have partnered with the ALMA and Headway networks to handle all our in-network insurance claims and payments. However, for those who do not participate in the above insurances, we will still be happy to provide you with a “super bill” to submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement based on your Out-Of-Network benefits.

What age groups do you see?

We are now open to seeing teenagers and adults (13 to 60 years old).

What states do you see patients in?

We are in New York City but have licenses to see patients remotely in New York, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington DC.

How much are your services? Do you have discounts or sliding scales?

Intakes are around 60-90 minutes and cost $450. 45-minute follow-up appointments are usually reserved for psychotherapy and/or extended evaluations for medication management and are billed at $350. 25-minute follow-up appointments are the standard for medication management and are billed at $250. We provide a discounted rate for full-time adult students. Please let the doctor know your status before or during your first session.

Do you prescribe DEA-controlled substances/Federally Scheduled Medications like ADHD medications or Benzodiazepines?

Although we serve MD, VA, DC, NY, and CT for medication management and psychotherapy, under the Federal Ryan Haight Act, patients requiring DEA Controlled Substances/Federally Scheduled Medications via telemedicine (online appointments) must be located within the legal, geographical boundaries of New York State and willing to legally attest to being in NYS at the time of their appointments.

Additionally, as per DEA guidelines, under The Ryan Haight Act, all patients receiving DEA Controlled Substances/Federally Scheduled Medications must be seen in person at least once before resuming online telemedicine appointments.

Examples of DEA Controlled Substances/Federally Scheduled Medications:

  • ADHD Medication (Adderall, Concerta, Vyvanse, Ritalin, etc.)

  • Benzodiazepines (Ativan, Xanax, Valium, Klonopin, etc).

  • Atypical Anxiolytics (Neurontin/Gabapentin, Lyrica/Pregabalin, Provigil/Modafinil, etc.)

If you aren’t sure if this applies to you, don’t hesitate to ask!

The DEA has currently waived the in-person and state-binding requirements until December 2024. We will keep you all updated as we get new development

I might have a personality disorder (i.e., Borderline personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, etc.). Do you treat patients with these conditions?

Usually, patients with diagnosed personality disorders do not respond solely to medications and do well with intense psychotherapy. Due to our hybrid, online, part-time model, we cannot provide patients with this level of intense psychotherapy. Suppose you are diagnosed with a personality disorder (or think you might have one). In that case, you will have to be engaged in regular psychotherapy with an outside provider before starting with our practice and maintain this relationship throughout your time with us unless your psychotherapist states that psychotherapy is no longer required for your particular condition. This policy ensures you get the safest and BEST treatment designed for your situation.
